Mankind Pharma’s, UNWANTED-72 is a single dose emergency contraceptive pill, which offers you an option to deal with the chances of unintended pregnancy. UNWANTED-72 contains levonorgestrel 1.5 mg, that is an orally active progestational agent, employed for emergency contraception or post coital contraception within 72 hours in case of unprotected intercourse or a known or suspected contraceptive failure.UNWANTED- 72 is not effective in termination of an existing pregnancy.
What is emergency Contraception?
Emergency contraception offers choice to women with respect to contraception, and thus, avoids pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. Often called morning after pill, Emergency contraceptive pills are hormone pills that should be taken within 72 hrs, after having unprotected intercourse.The sooner the dosing begins, the more effective it will be.
How does it work?
UNWANTED - 72 is a hormone pill, so works in the similar way as natural hormone does, depending on where you may be in the menstrual cycle
| • | It prevents or delays the release of an egg from the ovary If given prior to ovulation, or |
| • | The Pill also works by thickening the mucus around the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus and reach any egg that may have been released, or |
| • | It will help in prevention of the fertilized egg from traveling down the fallopian tube and implanting in the uterus if female has already ovulated. |
How to use UNWANTED - 72?
| • | UNWANTED - 72 is in oral formulation, thus, can be taken with water within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Incase of vomiting within 1 hour of taking the medication, consult your health care professional whether to repeat that dose or not. |
| • | UNWANTED - 72 should not be used as a substitute of other regular contraceptive methods. |
| • | It is advisable, not to take UNWANTED – 72 if you are pregnant or suspecting pregnancy, as UNWANTED – 72 is for emergency contraception not for abortion. |
Who can use it?
Almost all women can use UNWANTED - 72, including lactating women. You may decide to use UNWANTED – 72 if :
| • | You have failed to use any precautionary measures. |
| • | Your IUD was expelled. |
| • | You used a diaphragm without spermicide. |
| • | You had intercourse against your will or any other reason, which can establish pregnancy out of your desire. |
